The 40 years old Rába Cinema closed its gates in 1999 mainly because of the opening of the first shopping center „Pláza” in Győr. The Rába Cinema was the only place in Győr and its surroundings, where art films were screened and it was also a centre of visual arts. (MEDIAWAVE Festival, film weeks, film clubs, art video rent, movie and art library, screenings assisting education etc. )

The County Municipality transformed the cultural and youth functions of Rába Cinema into a public foundation supported by the government, - it also was extended with new functions,such as youth care and community development. The public fund, registered in the summer of 1999, started to operate in autumn at ROMER HOUSE.

The aims of establishing the public fund were, providing the ability for the self motivated youth groups to evolve, to take active role in cultural and youth programs and to prevent different addictions by offering a pleasant atmosphere in ROMER HOUSE.

ROMER HOUSE has become a leisure and cultural centre for the youth of Győr and its surroundings. In opposition with the structure of a traditional community centre, here in ROMER HOUSE the small sizes of the places make a cozy, friendlier and more personal atmosphere for visitors, where they can participate in different workshops, classes and programs all day long.
The ROMER HOUSE has turned into one of the first citadell of new type leisure and cultural activities.
